H1N1 discovery paves way for universal flu vaccine: UBC research
University of British Columbia researchers have found a potential way to develop universal flu vaccines and eliminate the need for seasonal flu vaccinations. Each year, seasonal influenza causes serious illnesses in three to five million people and 200,000 to 500,000 deaths. The 2009 H1N1 pandemic killed more than 14,000 people worldwide. Meanwhile, public health and bioterrorism concerns are heightened by new mutations of the H5N1 “bird flu” virus, published last week by the journal Nature, that could facilitate infection among mammals and humans. Led by Prof. John Schrader, Canada Research Chair in Immunology and director of UBC’s Biomedical Research Centre, the research team found that the 2009 H1N1 “swine flu” vaccine triggers antibodies that protect against many influenza viruses, including the lethal avian H5N1 “bird flu” strain. Details are published in the … Read entire article »

Compound (Flavonoid) found in foods and supplements shown to prevent the formation of blood clots
A compound called rutin, commonly found in fruits and vegetables and sold over the counter as a dietary supplement, has been shown to inhibit the formation of blood clots in an animal model of thrombosis. These new findings, led by investigators at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation (JCI), identify a novel strategy for preventing thrombosis, and help pave the way for clinical testing of this popular flavonoid as a therapy for the prevention and treatment of stroke and heart attack, as well as deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism. “It’s not always fully appreciated that the majority of Americans will die as the result of a blood … Read entire article »
Obesity! An Epidemic in America
by Otto Rigaba The problem with obesity has always been around us. Well, I do not know about you, every time I go overseas people in general are smaller than Americans. The portions in the restaurants are much smaller than ours here. The reasons for obesity in America are many, however, the main one is FOOD. Everywhere, I look, there is this food or people eating. I propose that we start with the portions we eat and physical activity. If we ignore, our eating habits and think that some pharmaceutical company will solve this one for us, we are in for some rude awakening. Have a look at the figures below. This situation is really frightening and … Read entire article »

Local markets destroyed; increasing hunger in the name of aid
Otto Rigaba It is interesting that you hardly hear of food as a material dumped on poor developing nations. However the effects of dumping food on developing nations especially when there is no emergency has devastating consequences on the farming community and the country’s economy. The notion that growing cash crops will somehow improve the quality of life in developing countries is laughable and misleading to say the least. There are hardly any developing countries which have had long term economic improvement by shifting from growing food to some cash crop which is bought at some ridiculous low price by developing countries. The biggest offenders are the North Americans, Europeans and the Chinese. The kicker is … Read entire article »
Imported Oil and Public Confusion
(By Alex Sher) Recently, a very popular blog, about the boycotting of oil companies that sell Middle Eastern oil, is circulating on the internet. The blogger properly mentioned Chevron/Texaco, Exxon/Mobil, and Marathon/Speedway as the buyers of Middle Eastern oil and wrongly accused two other companies. Many other bloggers re-printed the article without looking deeper into the statistics. In general, the article is passable. In my opinion, there are minor discrepancies, which I will address below. In the blog, Shell Oil Company was named as the #1 purchaser of the Middle Eastern oil (ME for future use). As we can see, from the release of the report from Dept. of Energy on August 2011, the blogger’s information is outdated. … Read entire article »
It’s official: Chocolate helps you lose weight
by Monica Sher To say that chocolates will go straight to your hips is passe, the latest research says you will actually weigh less. Wait, before you reach for the chocolate bar, you have to read between the fine lines of the research. While researchers in San Diego have revealed that antioxidants in chocolate are not only good for lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, but also your weight, there is merit in understanding first and bingeing later. Let’s delve deeper. Lead by Beatrice Golomb researchers from the University of California used data from a study of cholesterol-lowering drugs on healthy adults. The new research took into account how often the study’s subjects ate chocolates and how this … Read entire article »
